Selecting the Right Yoga Mat

One must select a Yoga mat that provides proper grip, stability and comfort. Most common mats have a thickness in the range of 1/8"-1/4" (approx. 3mm to 6mm), are about 2'-2.5'(approx. 60 to 80cm) in width and about 6' in length. Good mats are made out of materials that are free of any substances that are harmful to skin contact, and are available in many colors.

If you travel a lot, you may want to consider a lightweight versions of Yoga Mat. They are also an excellent choice for those that prefer a thinner mat for firmer grounding in standing postures.

If you are into Ashtanga or Hot yoga, it it important to select a slightly thicker mat (about 6mm or 1/4") for extra cushioning and/or for added shock cushioning in jumpings. Particularly for Ashtanga or Hot yoga, the material should be such that it retains most of its grip when wet. Often a range of accessories are available for use in Ashtanga or Power Yoga to help get maximum grip from your mat even when sweating heavily.

Taking Care of Your Yoga mat

Depending upon how soiled the mat is, use one of the following methods to keep it clean.

  • Lightly soiled Mat:

Use a spray bottle, or a damp sponge to apply a diluted dish washing liquid, or dish washing soap. Rub it clean and wipe the dirt off the mat with clean water. Finally, rub it clean with a dry towel and hang it to air dry.

  • Heavily Soiled Mat

Submerge the mat in a luke warm solution of mild detergent. Thoroughly hand wash it and then rinse in clean water. Gently squeeze out the excess water, place the mat on a large dry towel and then loosely roll up the mat and towel together. Set the roll aside to allow the towel to absorb the moisture out of the mat. Unroll the mat and hang it to air dry.

Air drying the mat also helps keep it fresh and odorless!
